Water Filtration

After years of telling people chemotherapy is the only way to try and eliminate cancer, a recent report by Johns Hopkins is finally talking about some alternative methods.

1. It’s a fact that every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

Self-testing kits are available at a relatively low cost. Though they are more limited than laboratory tests, they can be useful in certain situations. If you have evidence that a particular pollutant is or has been in your tap water, self-tests may allow you to determine if it continues to be there. You may want to test for that pollutant several times over the course of a year to allow for seasonal fluctuations. If the pollutant in question is bacteria or a common toxic metal, you can buy inexpensive and easy-to-use test kits. However, be aware you cannot self-test for viruses or parasites, organic chemicals, rare metals or radioactive substances. Once you have determined what substance or substances are present in your water, it is advisable that you use a water filtration system designed specifically for your situation to purify and keep your water purified, especially if your water supply is from a well, spring or other private source.

There are hundreds of brands of under-sink reverse osmosis  systems. These are typically the best-performing RO units in that they offer more stages of treatment than smaller countertop models. Also, many under-sink ROs employ booster pumps that maintain a higher water pressure, which allows the RO membrane to perform at its peak. When booster pumps are used, some run on electricity and some are powered by water pressure. All under-sink ROs require installation, and almost all come with a separate faucet that is installed on the countertop. Some rapid flow ROs do not require storage tanks.

The United states has one of the safest water supplies in the world. However, national statistics don’t tell you specifically about the quality and safety of the water coming out of your tap. That’s because drinking water quality varies from place to place, depending on the condition of the source water from which it is drawn and the treatment it receives. One place you can go is to your local water supplier, who is best equipped to answer questions about your specific water supply. Those of you who are on private water systems and have dirty water have probably been replacing sediment filters for years. A good alternative is a filter called the Spin-Down. Dirt in the water is separated by centrifugal action and collects at the bottom of the filter. You can see the dirt accumulation through the clear housing. When the dirt builds up, you simply open a valve at the bottom and it flows out. There is no downtime…you don’t even have to turn off the water to clean the unit, although a reusable filter screen is occasionally removed for washing. In addition, you may still have to use conventional sediment filters, but you won’t have to replace them as often.

Most disaster and RV water filter systems involve forward osmosis, which can make potable water even from muddy water. Often used by the military in both war zones and areas of disaster relief, forward osmosis utilizes a semi-permeable membrane that separates water from dissolved solutes.  Pathogens and toxins can be rejected by the forward osmosis membrane. 

Investigation of further developing of this process using hydration bags is underway. These hydration bags sometimes have the capacity to separate water from such agents as glucose and fructose, and may eventually lead to the ability to recycle urine as safe drinking water for the benefit of soldiers or backpackers, as well as the recycling of seawater as potable drinking water.

Reverse osmosis, or RO, has proven successful on a commercial level in terms of filtering water.  The ultimate intention of reverse osmosis systems is to completely remove all dissolved solids and suspended matter from the water.   One of the better-known successes of an RO system is removal of salt from sea water. 

Household RO units provide approximately two to ten gallons per day of treated water.  Though RO units remove many inorganic contaminants from the household drinking water supply, they also waste an estimated 3 to 20 times the amount of water that they have treated.   The addition of a carbon filter to an RO system can provide additional filtration by removing pesticides and similar chemicals that may be harmful.

There are two ways of evaluating how much purifier you need, and you should consider both ways. The first way is comparing your Tap Water Profile which is based on the following factors:

• The test report from your public water utility (or on your own test results if you have a well or other private system)
• Whether your public utility is in a city or large town as opposed to a small town
• Whether your public utility get its water from underground or surface water (or whether your private source is a well or surface water)
• The region where you live

Your Tap Water Profile helps you keep track of what you know about your tap water. That leaves what is unknown. The second way of looking at how much purifier you need is to realize that of the estimated eighty thousand chemicals in commercial use today, many of which have been found in water supplies, only a hundred or so are regularly tested for.

From this perspective, the safest course is to get a purifier, or water filtration system,  that will remove any specific pollutants that you know are in (or have been in) your tap water, and that will also remove the most of all the many kinds of pollutants that may be in your water.

• It’s more important to remove harmful pollutants from water than to save beneficial minerals that may be in it.
• If you drink distilled water, be sure to include a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
• Don’t store distilled water in plastic bottles; use glass.
• All other things being equal, hard water is healthier than soft water.
• And again, an important reminder: Don’t drink chlorinated water supplied by a water utility on a regular basis.
• If you purify your water using a drinking water filter, be sure to change the filter after the manufacturer’s recommended time. Using water filters beyond this point will not only defeat the purpose, but may result in harmful results.

Water treatment systems that treat only drinking and cooking water are commonly called POU (point-of-use) systems. Water systems that treat water in the entire house are called POE (point-of-entry) systems. Water softeners are an example of POE systems, as are large tanks filled with various filtration media. In some instances, especially where radon gas, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), or pathogens are in the water supply, it is desirable to have safe drinking and washing water at all water outlets in a house.

POE systems for health-related treatment can consist of one or more large canisters or tanks filled with granular activated carbons or other filter media. They can be simple flow-through tanks or timer-controlled tanks with automatic backwashing. Simple flow-through canisters and tanks for whole-house water treatment systems can cost from around $300 to $800. Automatic backwashing systems typically cost from $1,100 up to several thousand dollars. For removing chlorine, VOCS, or radon gas, a single, flow-through tank with granular carbon will suffice. If bacteria or viruses are a concern, a POE UV system or an ozonation system is required. If cysts are a concern, a large carbon block filter or an ultra-filtration filter is indicated.
